Summertime is the right time for fun in the sun. But even in Summer, life doesn’t always feel sunny. We all go through ups and downs, and our moods naturally shift from season to season, week to week, day to day, and even moment to moment. Still, I think it’s so important to find everyday joy in the simple experience of living.

So much can affect our mood and outlook on life. The news, world events, social media, work, personal challenges, habits, and the people and interactions that fill our days can all play a part. Some of these things lift us up, while others chip away at our sense of joy, connection, and well-being. That’s all part of being human, which is why it helps to stay aware of both our inner state and the external world.

Sometimes inspiration and hope feel out of reach. Tiredness, lack of sleep, illness, injury, hardship, and the ordinary challenges of daily life can leave us feeling out of sorts. At those times, it helps to remember that we’re not alone, and that it’s not a failure of character. It’s simply the nature of being alive.

Even the most upbeat, enthusiastic, extroverted, and open-hearted among us sometimes forget how to cultivate joy and wonder. It’s natural to feel down, to get stuck in an emotional funk, or to struggle to find inspiration. The good news is that there are simple ways to shift our mindset and foster a healthier outlook.

What matters most is a willingness to take action and open ourselves back up to the joy we can experience in everyday moments. I believe inspiration and joy are always within us; sometimes they simply go dormant and need a little nudge to come back to life. That’s a powerful skill we can all cultivate.

We do this through small, intentional actions, and the warmer months offer an ideal opportunity to build habits that naturally support a more positive outlook. Taking a walk around the neighborhood, going on a day trip to an unfamiliar town, having a picnic with friends, watching the sunrise or sunset, creating a daily ritual that brings joy, attending a concert, reading an inspiring book, joining a fitness class, volunteering in your community, or hiking in nature are all simple ways to open ourselves up to serendipity, inspiration, and joy.
